The Organizing Committee of the 12th African University Games Honors Heads of Participating Delegations and Commends Ain Shams University’s Role in Supporting the Games
The Organizing Committee of the 12th African University Games “Cairo 2026” held a ceremony honoring the heads of participating delegations at the Ain Shams University Student Residence, in the presence of Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, President of the African University Sports Federation and a member of the International University Sports Federation; members of the Executive Committee of the African University Sports Federation; Dr. Ahmed Kamel Mahdy, Chairman of the Games Organizing Committee; Dr. Hesham Ahmed Ali, Director of the Games; and a number of university presidents, sports federation officials, and heads of participating delegations.
Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Acting Minister of Culture, affirmed that Egypt’s hosting of the 12th African University Games “Cairo 2026” reflects the country’s prominent standing and its role in supporting university sports across Africa. He noted that the Games coincide with several important African and sporting occasions, giving the event special significance and reinforcing its message of strengthening cooperation and friendship among the continent’s youth.
The Minister added that the Games’ broad participation by African countries and universities underscores the importance of university sports in shaping young people’s character and promoting the values of competition, cooperation, and teamwork. He emphasized Egypt’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with African countries in ways that enhance engagement among the continent’s youth and open new avenues for collaboration.
For his part, Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, President of the African University Sports Federation, stated that the ceremony reflects appreciation for the heads of delegations participating in the Games. He praised Egypt’s efforts in organizing the African sporting event and the cooperation demonstrated by the various entities and committees to ensure the success of the Games.
Dr. Ahmed Kamel Mahdy, Chairman of the Games Organizing Committee, emphasized that the ceremony was held in recognition of the heads of participating delegations, whose presence and participation played an important role in the success of the Games. He noted that the Organizing Committee was keen to provide all necessary facilities for the delegations and maintain continuous coordination with the African University Sports Federation and relevant entities to ensure the smooth running of the competitions and activities.
Dr. Hesham Ahmed Ali, Director of the Games, explained that “Cairo 2026” represents an African sporting and youth gathering that embodies the values of friendship and cooperation among the continent’s people. He stressed that the various working teams made continuous efforts to ensure the smooth running of the competitions and provide the best possible conditions for participating in delegations and students.
Attendees commended the role played by Ain Shams University in supporting the Games and the facilities and resources it provided, particularly through the Student Residence, which hosted several activities and participating delegations. They also praised the efforts of the University’s working teams in providing extensive logistical and organizational support, contributing to the success of the Games and ensuring that the event was delivered in a manner befitting Egypt’s standing and its role in hosting African university sporting events.
The ceremony witnessed the honoring of the heads of participating delegations in recognition of their participation in the Games, amid an atmosphere reflecting friendship and communication among students from African universities and highlighting the role of university sports in fostering closer ties and cooperation among the continent’s countries.
The Games are jointly organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, headed by Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Acting Minister of Culture; the Ministry of Youth and Sports, headed by Mr. Gohar Nabil; the African University Sports Federation, headed by Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Vice Chairman of the Higher Organizing Committee of the 12th African University Games; and the Egyptian University Sports Federation, under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed Kamel Mahdy, Chairman of the Games Organizing Committee.
The 12th African University Games “Cairo 2026” are being held at a time when sport converges with major African celebrations. The Games coincide with African Union Day, the International Day of University Sport, and the 55th anniversary of the African University Sports Federation, giving the event special significance and making Cairo a platform for celebrating the journey of African university sports. The Games bring together the continent’s youth around the values of competition, cooperation, and friendship while opening new avenues for communication and building a shared future.
