University Code of Ethics – Ain Shams University

As a prestigious educational institution, Ain Shams University plays an important and effective role in society through the dissemination of knowledge, the promotion of creativity, and the encouragement of innovation. In addition, the University fulfills an educational role aimed at instilling and consolidating moral, cultural, and spiritual values that contribute to building the Egyptian character, preserving national identity, and reinforcing the principles of citizenship, tolerance, and non-discrimination — values enshrined in the 2014 Constitution.

Building on its distinguished academic, educational, and societal role, as well as its long-standing scientific history, Ain Shams University has attached utmost importance to adopting and applying a system of university conduct and ethics. Accordingly, the University has established a Code of Ethics encompassing the rules, values, and behaviors that must be observed and implemented by all members of the university community — namely: faculty members and their assistants, students, and administrative staff — in the performance of their duties, functions, and daily practices both inside and outside the University.

The primary aim of adopting the University Code of Ethics is to emphasize Ain Shams University’s commitment to building individuals, developing their capacities and skills, and thereby contributing to the achievement of the University’s vision, advancing its mission, and providing the labor market with graduates who excel not only academically but also ethically and humanely. This can be achieved through the establishment of an ethical academic environment grounded in a set of guiding values and moral standards derived from religious beliefs, traditions, cultural heritage, and a civilization deeply rooted in history.

It is no secret that the social, political, and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have extended to the educational process worldwide. The use of technology in education has shifted from being optional to becoming a pressing necessity, emerging as the optimal solution for teaching and learning, and ensuring continuity regardless of institutional readiness. However, the integration of technology into education has not been without challenges, including insufficient resources, misuse of technology, cybersecurity breaches, cyberbullying, and more. These challenges have arisen either due to the novelty of online learning and social media engagement, a lack of knowledge or technical skills, misuse, or in some cases, the absence of a binding ethical framework restraining opportunistic behaviors.

Since e-learning is an integrated system involving several stakeholders — faculty members and teaching assistants (the instructors), students (the beneficiaries), the educational content, and technical staff (responsible for networks and maintenance) — it has become necessary to incorporate this system within the University’s Code of Ethics, following a clear scientific methodology that outlines the responsibilities of all stakeholders in the e-learning process.

Respecting and applying the values and ethics outlined in this Code provides a strong guarantee for the advancement and progress of the University’s educational and research systems. Any violation of the provisions of this Code may subject the offender to disciplinary and legal accountability in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations.

The University Code of Ethics comprises three main sections:

  1. The first dedicated to faculty members and teaching assistants.

  2. The second to students.

  3. The third to administrative staff.

Each section also includes provisions specific to e-learning.
