The Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology (OMR) Department located on the first floor is a diagnostic specialty unit focused on imaging of the teeth, jaws, face, and related structures to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning in dentistry and maxillofacial care.
Main role and scope
●Performs and interprets dental and maxillofacial imaging, including intraoral and extraoral radiographs, panoramic images, cephalometric studies, cone‑beam CT (CBCT) for head.
● Provides imaging‑based diagnosis for a wide range of conditions: impacted teeth, jaw cysts and tumors, infections, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, trauma, sinus disease, implant planning, and developmental anomalies.
Responsibilities of the specialists
●Oral and maxillofacial radiologists are dentists with advanced specialty training in maxillofacial imaging; they determine which imaging exam is appropriate, ensure radiation safety, and issue formal radiology reports for clinicians.
●They advise on radiation protection protocols, quality assurance, and optimal use of imaging modalities to minimize dose while maximizing diagnostic value.
Clinical services and technology
●Department typically offers a full suite of exams: intraoral X‑rays, panoramic and cephalometric radiographs and CBCT.
●They often support hospital‑wide digital imaging interpretation systems and providing full written diagnostic report of the images taken at the facility.
Education and research role
● Many OMR departments are training centers for postgraduate programs, providing structured coursework, supervised clinical imaging, and research in diagnostic imaging and radiation sciences.
●They collaborate with oral surgery, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, ENT, oncology, and other specialties to advance evidence‑based use of imaging in patient care.
