The Oral & Maxillofacial Prosthodontics Department located on the first floor is a specialized unit that focuses on rehabilitating oral and facial defects to restore function, appearance, and quality of life.
Scope and main functions
● Provides prosthetic rehabilitation for patients with congenital defects (e.g., cleftrelated defects, missing eyes/ears), acquired defects from tumors or surgery, and trauma‑related facial losses.
● Designs and fabricates intraoral prostheses (obturators, speech‑aid prostheses, complex dentures, implant‑supported prostheses) and extraoral/facial prostheses (ears, noses, orbital prostheses).
Clinical role and teamwork
● Restores key functions such as speech, swallowing, chewing, and facial aesthetics after head and neck cancer treatment, trauma, or major surgery.
● Works in close collaboration with oral & maxillofacial surgery, ENT, plastic surgery, oncology, speech therapy, and psychology as part of multidisciplinary head and neck teams.
Education and training
● In dental schools and teaching hospitals, the department trains students and residents in advanced removable prosthodontics and maxillofacial prosthetics, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and prosthesis fabrication for complex cases.
● Programs emphasize evidence‑based care, biomaterials, occlusion, esthetics, and long‑term follow‑up of medically compromised and oncology patients.
