Center Establishment
The Center for the Development of English Language Teaching at Ain Shams University was established with the approval of the University Council on 26/1/1976 and the decision of the Supreme Council of Universities in 1977 with the aim of providing an integrated and comprehensive program to develop the teaching of the English language in Egypt at the national level and to contribute to the preparation of English language teachers at all levels of educational stages, starting from the basic education stage and ending with postgraduate studies and research.
In view of the important national role played by the Center, the State has given it great attention, represented by supporting the establishment of the Center and its human and technical capabilities through concluding a scientific cooperation agreement between Egypt and the United States of America, with funding from the US Aid Agency (Fulbright Foundation), as well as signing a cooperation agreement with the British Development Agency and the British Cultural Center, which includes funding the appointment of a number of British experts in the English language to work at the Center.
In light of the state’s keenness to support the independence of units and centers with a special character, the Supreme Council of Universities issued Resolution No. 32 dated 3/14/2006, considering the center as a unit with a special character that has its own technical, financial and administrative independence, aiming to prepare and qualify English language teachers and graduate highly qualified cadres in the level of the English language in the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The Center's Vision
Our deep belief in our educational and pedagogical mission stems from our belief in the importance of full cooperation and constructive communication with all those who are deeply interested in teaching and learning English in Egypt and the Arab countries. This interest includes a wide range of individuals and organizations concerned with the English language and its teaching.
This interest is based on a full understanding of the importance of continuous professional development for teachers of English as a foreign language, as well as for teacher trainers and those who manage their learning environments. Therefore, we place great emphasis on a culture of standards, which helps us define our goals and ambitions for English language teaching, as well as review teaching mechanisms and programs to ensure these ambitions are met and work to enhance them.
• The Center's Mission
This requires formulating standards agreed upon by the Ministry, university faculties, and other institutions with which we work. This is followed by developing the programs offered in accordance with these standards.
