Unit Objectives:

Establish, equip, and manage a comprehensive healthcare service for the elderly in the form of an outpatient clinic, a day hospital, and an inpatient rehabilitation department — both free of charge and for a fee.

Contribute, in collaboration with all departments, to the training of:

Faculty Staff, teaching assistants, and lecturers.

Postgraduate students in cooperation with the Department of General Internal Medicine.

The public through awareness seminars.

Participate in conducting research and development projects as required by various bodies and institutions.

Unit Achievements:

Participation in organizing the scientific activity of the Ain Shams Ageing Brain Initiative team at the Geriatrics Department, held online on Wednesday, September 7. Greg Walsh (GBHI fellow and dementia specialist) gave a lecture entitled "Understanding of the Impact of the Environment on People Living with Dementia." The session was attended by 15 physicians from the Geriatrics Department.

Participation in organizing another scientific activity of the Ain Shams Ageing Brain Initiative team at the Geriatrics Department, held online on Wednesday, November 9. Prof. Dr. Sandra Hiego, Head of the Geriatrics Department in Belgium, delivered a lecture entitled "Practice in Geriatrics Hospital Day and Memory Clinic: Belgium Experience." The event was attended by 20 physicians from the Geriatrics Department.

A seminar was held at El Rehab Sports Club (Beit El Aila) for elderly club members on Wednesday, November 16, entitled "Memory Disorders and How to Strengthen It." A total of 22 elderly attendees from the club participated.

Participation in educational lectures for physicians under the General Secretariat of Mental Health. Dr. Heba Tawfik, Director of the Geriatrics Unit, gave a lecture on Saturday, December 3, titled "Mild Cognitive Impairment: What Do We Know?"

An online lecture was conducted for physicians on Tuesday, December 6, on the pharmacological treatment of dementia as part of the second awareness campaign of the Dementia Support Initiative in Egypt. Fifteen physicians from various specialties — including geriatrics, neurology, and psychiatry — attended the session.

Participation in organizing the First Geriatric Medicine Subspecialties Scientific Day, held on Monday, January 2, 2023, at Martyr Ahmed Shawky Geriatric Hospital. Over 40 physicians from the Geriatrics Department attended the event.

An agreement was made to produce 8–10 awareness videos aimed at enhancing public medical knowledge about common diseases in the elderly, disease prevention, and improving memorization and recall strategies for students and interns at the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University. Four videos have already been recorded.
