Workshop on:
1. The Use of Digital Cameras in Determining the Geodetic Azimuth Angle
(Presenter: Norbert Kuhtreiber – Austria)
Organized by the Surveying Unit – Faculty of Engineering in collaboration with Minya University Faculty of Engineering.
Third: Support for Scientific Research and Postgraduate Students
One of the primary objectives of the unit is to support scientific research and researchers in the field of surveying. This is achieved through its highly qualified personnel with extensive academic and practical experience, as well as its possession of modern surveying equipment. As the unit is an integral part of the infrastructure of the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University, it contributes to scientific research in surveying not only at the academic level but also on practical and applied levels.
In this context, the unit has provided researchers from various universities with the necessary surveying instruments to collect field data for their research. It has also supplied them with archived field observations available within the unit. Furthermore, unit members have participated in supervising and evaluating numerous academic theses at different universities. They have also published and peer-reviewed a significant number of surveying-related research papers in both international and local scientific journals and have attended numerous relevant local and international conferences. Notably, the unit organized the FIG International Conference in 2001, held at the Armed Forces Officers’ Club in Kobri El-Qobba.
In the realm of scientific research, the unit was also a pioneer in establishing and operating a permanent GNSS observation station (located on the rooftop of the main Faculty of Engineering building at Ain Shams University). The unit is responsible for managing and operating this station, significantly enriching research in this field.
Additionally, many postgraduate students—both from the Faculty's academic staff and from external institutions—have successfully completed their Master’s and Ph.D. theses using satellite-based surveying (GPS) through the fixed station at the Faculty and using laser scanner systems.
