Materials Properties, Testing and Quality Control Research Unit

2025-06-11

Unit Objectives:

* Inspecting construction materials production.

* Developing and implementing quality control programs.

* Conducting laboratory tests on construction materials.

* Conducting non-destructive field tests.

* Calibrating and adjusting testing machines in construction site laboratories.

Unit Activities and Events:

The Materials Properties, Testing, and Quality Control Research Unit offers its expertise as a specialized university scientific body to institutions, organizations, and contracting companies in the business and private sectors in the field of testing materials and products used in construction and building, controlling and assuring the quality of materials and facilities, and preparing technical studies in its field of expertise. It also conducts laboratory and field tests and prepares the necessary studies, technical reports, and consultations in the following areas:

First: Conventional Testing

Conducting suitability tests for various engineering materials in the field of concrete and metal structures, such as physical and mechanical tests for concrete materials (aggregates, cement, water, additives, and reinforcing steel) and various building materials (bricks, tiles, flooring, building stones, and wood), as well as tests for fresh and hardened concrete and metal forms.

Conducting routine tests for quality control and monitoring of materials and products (concrete, concrete materials, reinforcing bars, bricks, other building materials, and industrial products such as welded joints and formed sections).

Load testing of concrete and steel bridges and various structural elements (slabs and beams) in concrete structures.

Conducting non-destructive testing on concrete structures, such as determining the compressive strength of concrete using cylindrical samples (cores) of hardened concrete, testing the surface hardness of concrete (Schmidt hammer), ultrasonic testing, detecting the thickness of the concrete cover, detecting the locations of reinforcing steel within the concrete, and testing.

Extraction testing and determining the degree of corrosion of reinforcing steel in various locations. The unit also studies the properties and behavior of structures to evaluate them and develop the necessary restoration and reinforcement programs.

The unit designs various types of concrete mixtures and conducts laboratory and practical tests, both with and without additives, while providing technical advice to central mixing plants.

The unit designs and monitors the implementation of quality control, monitoring, and assurance programs for materials, products, and structures, as well as calibrating testing machines in laboratories and on-site.

Conducting studies and laboratory tests on materials and facilities of various types (residential, administrative, industrial, etc.) with the aim of determining their safety and safe use.
