  • Understanding Change in Universities: Exploratory Case Studies in Two UK Universities (2010) Objective: The main objective of this thesis is to explore the responses of two UK universities to the changes in their external environment, mainly policy-driven changes. Its main research questions are as follows: 1. What are the current pressures for change perceived in the working environment of different types of universities in the UK? 2. How did the perceived pressures of change affect the functions, structure, decision-making, leadership, accountability and autonomy of universities? 3. How did the perceived pressures of change affect the functions, structure, decision-making, leadership, accountability and autonomy of academic fields? 4. Are there any differences in the perceived changes and change drivers between different academic fields and different types of university? Methodology: The two case studies were selected from the population of UK universities through a statistical analysis of HESA data about their total funding for both research and teaching. The analysis of this data has resulted in differentiating the universities into two groups: research-intensive and teaching-intensive. One highly research-intensive university and one highly teaching-intensive university were chosen. The data was collected through face-to-face interviews with thirty two senior management and academics in both universities. Results and conclusions: The overall result is that external policy-driven pressures in the UK context have affected the functions, structure, decision-making, leadership and accountability and autonomy of academics, in different types of universities and different types of academic fields. There were many similarities in the responses of the two case studies to external pressures, but there were also a number of differences that were attributed to the specific nature of each university and each academic field. In conclusion, the study offered several recommendations for policy and university management, it has also provided suggestions for future research, particularly the need to consider the interaction between research and teaching functions, the need to study academic fields’ responses to pressures of change, and the need for policies to take into account the varied nature of UK universities and the roles they play.
