Biography

Wael S. El-Sayed is a Professor of Microbiology and Environmental Biotechnology, and Director of Biotechnology Program at Faculty of Science, Ain Shams University. Having more than 25 years of research experience in the field of microbial biodegradation of hydrocarbons and microbial biotechnology, I have received my BSc in Microbiology and Chemistry from Ain Shams University and joined the microbiology department as a staff member to pursue my MSc in Microbiology (Relation of lipids to salt tolerance in certain bacteria isolated from Gulf of Aqaba) (1999). I then moved to the Institute of biological science, Tsukuba University, Japan as a visiting research exploring novel method for analyzing halobacterial pigments from extremely halophilic archaea and determining it phylogenetic affiliations (1999 - 2000). Then I was appointed as researcher at Chiba University, Department of molecular cell biology, Japan to earn my PhD. My PhD research was dedicated to the biochemistry and molecular biology of microbial degradation of aromatic compounds, under aerobic and anaerobic conditions with particular focus on characterization of metabolic pathways, corresponding proteins and genes (2000 - 2003). As a postdoctoral fellow at CRIEPI, Japan, I continued research on isolation and molecular characterization of anaerobic dehalorespiring bacteria for detoxification of organochlorine hazardous pollutants (2005 - 2007). I was appointed as an Associate Professor at Faculty of Science, Ain Shams University conducting research on Genetics of dehalorespiring novel anaerobic bacteria, Diversity of catabolic genes in contaminated environments, Genetic construction of bacterial strains with desired characteristics for industrial and environmental applications. Currently, and as a full professor, my research is dedicated to environmental biotechnology applications such as bioremediation of hazardous pollutants and monitoring bacterial communities in contaminated environments using metagenomic approaches. My work appeared in lots of publications in peer reviewed journals, various projects, along with international patents.
