Dr. Ghadir Saied Mohammed El-Housseiny

Biography

GHADIR El-Housseiny is an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the Faculty of Pharmacy - Ain Shams University (ASU), Cairo, where she has been since 1999. From 1999 to 2003 she was a pharmacy student and graduated with an excellent grade of honor. She served as a teaching assistant until 2009, when she earned her Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical sciences (Microbiology and Immunology), then her PhD in 2016. She served as a Lecturer of Microbiology & Immunology in Faculty of Pharmacy, ASU till 2021, after which she became an Associate Professor of Microbiology & Immunology till the current date. Ghadir is a fluent English writer and speaker and is often requested to support other colleagues. She has established a solid foundation of juried publications from which she is building a scholarly agenda of demonstrated merit to my department, University, and to the profession at large. She has made over 35 research papers (h-index=14). This body of work has earned her certificates in international publishing, which supports the international classification of Ain Shams University from 2019-2026. Moreover, she is currently a Co-editor in chief of Archives of Pharmaceutical Sciences ASU, and a Reviewer for several international Q1 and Q2 journals including Journal Of Surfactants And Detergents, BMC Microbiology, Frontiers in medicine, Journal of Fungi and Scientific Reports. She was also chosen as a Guest Editor at Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology (Q1) for the article collection titled “Rekindling of a Masterful Precedent: Bacteriophage”, in October 2021. Ghadir’s research interests span both Biotechnology and Medical microbiology. Her key research areas have been the production and optimization of different secondary bacterial and fungal products, including antibiotics. Optimization of production is mainly through the application of response surface methodology and Design of experiments using modeling software and Artificial neural networking using prediction software by wild or genetically modified microorganisms. She has worked using different fermentation techniques including submerged liquid fermentation and solid-state fermentation. In addition, she has experience in the purification and characterization of microbial products including endophytes. In the Medical microbiology area, she has worked on studying bacterial virulence factors using tissue culture. She has also investigated the different bacterial resistance mechanisms and the use of bacteriophages as alternatives to antibiotics. She has focused on the isolation, purification and optimization of Phages. In addition, she worked on their characterization and formulation to be used in preclinical studies as antibacterial agents. Ass. Professor Ghadir participated in teaching and updating various undergraduate and post graduate courses in ASU and other universities in Cairo including Al-Azhar University, British University in Cairo (BUE), Misr International University (MIU) and German International University (GIU). She also participated in various student activities including graduation projects and oral examination committees. She is currently supervising numerous Masters and PhD students from different universities in Cairo. Fortunately, she was able to participate in several research projects throughout her career. For example, she was also an Associate researcher in the scientific research funded by the Post graduate Affairs Sector in the faculty under the title: “Bioprocess Engineering for the production of antibiotics by Streptomyces rimosus and Acremonium chrysogenum”, 2020. Additionally, she was chosen as a staff member and quality assurance member in the international project: “Immune Modulation Certificate” co-funded by Erasmus+ program of the European Union whose curricula was designed in collaboration with University of Leipzig (Germany), University of L’oraine (France) and University of Athens (Greece). She is also the Director of Culture Collection Center in Ain Shams University (CCASU) belonging to the World Data Center For Microorganisms (WDCM), Registered number 1186.
