Prof. Dr. Mohamed El Eraky is a distinguished Egyptian scholar and development expert in the field of agricultural economics. He earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University in 1987, following his M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees from Ain Shams University in Cairo. His academic journey laid the foundation for a career that spans more than four decades, combining teaching, research, and international development consultancy.
Dr. El Eraky has served as Professor of Agricultural Economics at Ain Shams University since 1999, specializing in applied econometrics, policy analysis, rural development, and agribusiness marketing. He has supervised numerous graduate students, guiding the completion of nine Ph.D. dissertations and twelve M.Sc. theses. His academic leadership extended internationally when he became Professor and Chairman of the Agribusiness Department at the United Arab Emirates University, where he also contributed to the Emirates Journal for Agricultural Sciences and led pioneering research on consumer food demand.
Beyond academia, Dr. El Eraky has played a pivotal role in shaping agricultural and rural development policies across the Middle East and Africa. As Country Representative for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), he engaged in policy dialogue with the Egyptian government, supported project design, and participated in supervision missions. His contributions included projects such as the Upper Egypt Rural Development Project and On Farm Irrigation Development in the Old Lands. He also collaborated with the UN on climate change initiatives and food security programs.
His consultancy work with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other international agencies focused on agricultural trade, policy reform, and rural poverty alleviation. Notably, he contributed to the Sustainable Agricultural Development Strategy: 2030 for Egypt and participated in FAO’s inter agency mission on soaring food prices.
Dr. El Eraky has authored an extensive body of research, with publications addressing critical issues such as food expenditure patterns, inflation, poverty indicators, agricultural credit markets, and the environmental impact of rice straw. His work has been published in leading journals including the Egyptian Journal of Agricultural Economics and the Arab University Journal of Agricultural Sciences. He has also written influential technical reports for organizations such as IFAD, FAO, and the Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment and Development.
His scholarly excellence has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the State Encouragement Award from the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology in 1999, and the Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award from Michigan State University in 1987. He is a member of several professional societies, including the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association and the Egyptian Association of Agricultural Economics.
