Patents, Opportunities for R&D, and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

Outline:
The session provides an overview of the patent system and its significance in the pharmaceutical field, in particular how it relates to the pharmaceutical industry and medicines availability. It covers the legal requirements and conditions to grant a patent, the exclusive right conferred on the patent owner and how they could be exploited either directly or through licensing or assignment, and the most relevant exceptions and limitations to these rights and the rationale for them. Also, the session discusses the opportunities of effectively using patent information, especially public domain information to support pharmaceutical R&D and industry.
