Arterial Blood Gases Interpretation

  • Outline:
  • You are the clinical pharmacist in charge. Your patient has just been admitted to the ER with hypotension. His arterial blood gas (ABG) shows pH 7.029, pCO2 28, pO2 129, and HCO3 6. How would you approach this patient?
  • Interpreting ABG is a crucial skill for medical professionals. Most pharmacists are required to interpret ABG results at some point in their careers. ABGs provide a valuable look at various factors regarding ventilation, oxygenation, and acid-base status, and give guidance in making decisions for managing critically ill patients.
  • ABG interpretation takes practice and critical thinking. Yet most clinicians struggle with the interpretation of this common test. Hence, errors in ABG interpretation are common in clinical practice.
  • This workshop is designed for all pharmacists to provide a simplified explanation of ABGs, including a stepwise approach for results interpretation. Hands-on training on practical cases will be included and selected etiologies of the four acid-base disorders will be covered. It is simple, perhaps simplistic, but it will hopefully provide the attendees with the necessary tools and confidence to make better sense of ABG results in the future.
  • ABG interpretation is easy, break it down into steps, and do them in order.
