Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khalid Ibrahim: the state’s benefit of scientific research is very vulnerable

We find a lot of researchers who are working on the development of science and knowledge that can benefit the community, but where are these people and their research, whether that they have done or supervising the results of fact ... In this report we highlight one of those, it is Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khalid Ibrahim, Head of Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science, Ain Shams University, summed up in the interests of extraction products that can be used in the treatment or the production of materials with an economic payoff.


Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khalid Ibrahim supervised on many research theses, including studies on acquired infections in hospitals and their causes, and the other on antibiotics, methods of discovery and development of antibiotics that can treat types of resistant bacteria to usual antibiotics, and a third on the solid and liquid waste and ways to take advantage of them.


Ibrahim Explained that his research conducted surveys on acquired infection in hospitals, and showed that there are diseases afflict patients in hospitals can be deadly and dangerous than that entered the hospital for treatment, indicating that the study revealed a high rate of infections in hospitals in Egypt to 30 -35%, which is equivalent to a patient out of every 3 patients, and went on to surge this ratio compared with other developed countries that do not exceed the proportion of hospital infections where about 8%, indicating to the presence of other countries increased the incidence of Egypt, but it is medically underdeveloped countries do not take adequate protection measures.


He added: During the study many tried to search for sources of infection, and found that the air conditioning vents in the rooms and the other is one of the important sources of infection, in addition to non-sterile instruments, touching contaminated objects and other causes of known infection.

Prospective studies turning bacteria to antibiotics


Ibrahim spoke about bacteria and viruses that are difficult to treat because of the lack of antibiotics with the good effectiveness, as these bacteria were able to develop itself to resist those antibiotics and overcome them, and thus delay the treatment of the patient, especially since the mechanism used to diagnose the disease and know what type of bacteria is not true, because it requires analysis of type and the degree of sensitivity of bacteria to antibiotics to prescribe appropriate treatment.


He explained that they had conducted studies on the level of molecular bacteria, and they were isolating fine particles of bacteria, and compared between the components and the components of the bacteria that have been isolated in other countries, and treatments that have been described for the treatment of these diseases, and thus were able to provide components of antibiotics can treat these diseases, or at least know the size of the problem.


Ibrahim stopped by his aspiring to establish joint projects with the Faculty of Engineering, especially in the field of sanitary engineering to extract the new component which is a collection of microbes interact together to produce fermentable beneficial to human health and therefore can benefit from it in the manufacture of antibiotics or may be an alternative to antibiotics, and after that researchers tried to access the product pharmacist has to achieve this within a year from now, but the experience of the drug on humans are not allowed to researchers at the faculty as it is the prerogative of other authorities.


Researches reveal the possibility of converting animal waste to energy


With regard to solid and liquid waste, Ibrahim explained that waste and garbage are utilized around the world, sold and re-manufactured and production of materials with economic benefit, while in Egypt waste remains a burden on the country's economy... Through studies, they found that there are products yielding direct, including biogas, which is similar to natural gas in the potential areas of benefit from it, but Biogas is a product of animal waste, the study suggested that is determined by a specific place within the Egyptian village is allocated for the collection of animal waste and extract this gas which can be used in electricity generation, or an alternative that is converted to natural gas.

He added: Egyptian trash is rich in organic waste that can be converted into biogas to take advantage of it.

Commenting on the extent in which the state institutions can benefit of scientific research, commented that this is very weak, although we hope to be open areas of cooperation between us and the productive sector, and attributed the lack of cooperation the existence of a crisis of confidence between the productive sector , research and academic institutions, as they do not recognize the importance of this research and its usefulness in provide economic benefit to resolve crises faced by the productive sector, adding that the developed countries that characterized its production contract with institutions where research provides the first support and the second working to resolve any problems facing the first and therefore we find mutual interest , benefit and high development degree.

Ibrahim said: There are many available researches to work on the application, but do not have the material potential for delivery to points of implementation, with less potential also to be applied on the ground, and in return, we find that the state is contracting with foreign countries, for example in the field of recycling waste, although they are getting high amounts without benefit by turning it into products that can take advantage of, but the methods of disposal may result in adverse effects.

And went on to say: We hope to hold meetings and Exhibition from which to convince business owners of the importance of the research side, adding that university tend began this trend but the issue still needs more support.

He added that the media remises in this aspect and they should highlight successful participation models to emulate others.

The efforts of researchers and scientists will remain and will be continuing to while achieving its objectives in the advancement of society, and the development of scientific research and practical use of it, only related to hopes for state institutions and businessmen who can give a strong boost in the way of achieving those goals.

It is noteworthy that Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khalid Ibrahim received a Bachelor of Science ( Microbiology - Chemistry ) - Ain Shams University in 1981, M.Sc. in Botany) Microbiology ) , Ain Shams University in 1986 and received a doctorate in philosophy of science in microbiology - Ain Shams University Year 1991, and worked for more than a year and a half as head of Biology Department at the university, he  gave 42 research published in different magazines, also supervised about 40 M.Sc. and Ph.D., has 24 scientific papers published in scientific journals , and was a jury member in a large number of scientific thesis and promotions ,this is beside  his obvious activities at Taibah University and Ain Shams University , as well as participation in a number of scientific societies.
